Inspirational Quotes for Meaningful Living

Responsibility is an Essential Component of Meaning in Life

Posted by paultpwong on January 5, 2017

Meaning researchers prefer a cognitive interpretation of meaningfulness and often omit “responsibility” as an essential component of meaning in life. Here are my questions for them:(1) Is it possible to live a meaningful life without any social & moral responsibility of helping others in need, or serving a worthy cause beyond oneself? (Can we have meaning without self-transcendence?) (2) Is it possible to live a meaningful life, if we do not exercise our capacities for freedom and responsibility to choose meaning as a core value, rather than accept the value of a consumer society or communist totalitarian ideology? (Can we have meaning without self-determination?) (3) Is it possible to live a meaningful life, if we do not assume personal responsibility to choose our own path that is true to our own core values, interests and character strengths?) (Can we have meaning without authenticity?)

Thank you so much. I enjoy work, such as this, that inspire me to think about how this can be incorporated into my pilgrimage within.
I am reading Thomas Merton’s Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander and this reminds me of many of the questions posed there.
